Papua New Guinea 1982 January to April 1982, Steamships Trading Company @ Ok Tedi Project, Port Moresby May 1982, PNG Printing, Port Moresby The Steamships Brambles Joint Venture engaged me on a four-month assignment to design and implement its acconting and administrative systems for what was then then largest contract ever awarded in Papua New Guinea. Steamships' job was to transport cargo from Port Moresby to Ok Tedi's mine site in the remote Star Mountains in Western Province. In Port Moresby, the heavy machinery and other cargo was carried by lighter from the importing vessels on to barges, which were then towed by tugs west along the coast then up the meandering Fly river to Kiunga, the port for the mine. The navigation channel for the barges crossed the Indonesian border in various places and Papua New Guinea officials had talks with the Indonesian Government and the Indonesian President Suharto pledged cooperation. At the peak construction period, it was expected that seven tugs and 13 barges would be ferrying more then 250,000 tonnes of materials to the mine site. The draught limit for vessels navigating the Fly to Kiunga was only 2.7m, so only shallow-draught boats could be used most of which would be chartered from Asian ports.
