Another miserable homecoming! Somehow returning to Australia after an overseas job never quite measured to my expectations. Moved into the Canberra house which I had bought in 1976 and got a job as Accountant/Office Manager with a truck dealer and repair shop. Quite a come-down after all the other things I had done but this was home and it was all I could hope for! The Canberra winter came which was the last straw so I bought a slip-on camper on a V8 FORD utility and left town.

My first job was with the German company of Pieroth Wines at Strathfield in Sydney. Drove to work from the Great Western Caravan Park. At that same time, I was asked to attend a job interview on Mornington Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Flew up there to have a look at the job but tunred it down. By the time I got back to Sydney, the Pieroth job had also turned sour and I hit the road again, heading north.

By the time I reached Brisbane I had received a telegram from Mount Isa Mines, offering me the position of Investment Accountant for their new Hilton Mine venture near Mt. Isa. Kept moving north and took up my new position with MIM in November 1979. Mount Isa was an interesting community but the job was a total sinecure to which I was completely unsuited. I didn't want to "retire" at age 35 in a job which I could do in a couple of hours a day. What was I going to do for the rest of the day? Well, I did what I had always done in a such a situation: I applied for another job.

B&C Motors in Mackay offered me the position of accountant/office manager and I motored down to the coast. Mackay was a lovely town.

Other challenges called and I hitched up the caravan agin and moved to Brisbane where I found temporary work with a firm of chartered accountants in an old PAtrician-style building along Brisbane river. By that time, Noel had settled on his small acreage near Caboolture and I visited him almost every weekend.
